(1) Training objectives

With the inheritance of the college spirit of "Respect People and Cause. Be Excellent and Cordial.", the Pharmacy Department is dedicated to cultivating high-quality professionals and technical talents with firm ideological belief, professional morality and technologies. With adaption to the development requirements of the Internet plus Biomedical market, students are expected to have good public ethics and professional ethics, teamwork spirit, and lifelong learning concept. Students are expected to master the knowledge and technical skills of pharmaceutical preparation production and drug quality control. Students are also expected to develop into high-quality and technical talents by mastering the production and inspection, R&D and management skills, usage and analysis skills related to drugs, health care products, cosmetics, pharmaceutical devices and other products.

Students are expected to 

1. Master the necessary ideological and political theory, basic knowledge of science and culture, and knowledge of Chinese traditional culture;

2. Be Familiarized with laws and regulations related to their major, environmental protection, safety and fire protection, etc.

3. Master the basic knowledge of medicine preparation production, medication usage and quality control;

4. Be Familiarized with the knowledge of pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical analysis, Standard Manufacturing Practice, and the use and maintenance of pharmaceutical equipment;

5. Be Familiarized with the basic knowledge of regulations, policies, marketing and logistics of pharmaceutical management;

6. Be Familiarized with professional development trends in the field of pharmacy;

7. Master the basic ways of literature search and knowledge of mathematical statistics;

Major courses

The major offers 15 major courses, including 5 core courses: Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical analysis, Pharmacology, Manufacturing Practices, and Use and Maintenance of Pharmaceutical Equipment.

Major professional courses are described as follows

(7) Human Anatomy and Physiology

Main content: The composition, structure and physiological functions of human physiological systems, such as circulatory system, respiratory system, endocrine system, blood system, nervous system, and reproductive system. Basic knowledge and skill requirements for docking pharmacy positions.

(8) Pharmaceutical Administration and Regulations 

Main content: Drug Administration, Pharmaceutical Administration Law, New Drug Administration Law, Special Drug Administration Law, Imported Drug Administration Law, Manufacture Practice, Supply Practice, Measures for the administration of drug advertisements, Drug Intellectual Property Protection Regulations and corresponding legal responsibilities, etc. Basic knowledge and skill requirements for related pharmacy positions.

(9) Microbiology and Immunology 

Main content: morphological structures, reproductive modes and main characteristics of various microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses; nutrition, metabolism and growth characteristics of microorganisms; the immunological knowledge  of antigens, immunoglobulins, complement system, cytokines, antigen presentation, T cells , B cells, immune response, immune regulation and other. Provide basic vocational ability required for pharmacist positions, pharmaceutical factory production and quality inspection positions, preparation-related research positions, preparation analysis positions, etc.

(10) Pharmaceutical Basic Chemistry

Main content: properties of various solutions, concentration calculations, preparation methods of solutions; chemical reaction rate and chemical equilibrium theory; redox reaction and electrode potential and the composition of coordination compounds; the structure, naming, properties and applications of organic compounds such as hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon derivatives, heterocyclic compounds alkaloids, sugars, proteins, terpenoids and steroids, as well as the relationship with drugs; Errors in quantitative analysis and methods of reducing errors, effective numbers and data processing methods; the basic principles, methods and operating skills of common chemical analysis and instrumental analysis to determine substance content.

(11) Biochemistry

Main content: Learn and understand the material composition, structure, physical and chemical properties of organisms and the processes and regulations of various chemical changes in organisms, and explore the nature of life related to pharmacy at the molecular level. Provide the basic professional skills required for pharmacist positions, licensed pharmacist positions, pharmaceutical factory production and quality inspection positions, preparation analysis positions, and drug marketing.

(12) Summary of Disease Science 

Main content: clinical symptoms and main characteristics of common diseases, simple diagnosis basis and the law of occurrence, development and transformation of common diseases; general treatment principles and medication characteristics of common diseases. Basic knowledge and skill requirements for docking pharmacy positions.

(13) Medicinal Chemistry

Main content: classification and naming of commonly used drugs; structure-activity relationship, synthesis methods, simple mechanism of action, metabolism of drugs, typical structural characteristics of drugs, and ability to analyze the physical and chemical properties and stability of drugs. Provide the basic professional abilities required for pharmacist positions, licensed pharmacist positions, pharmaceutical factory production and quality inspection positions, preparation analysis positions, and drug marketing.

(14) Natural Medicine Chemistry

Main content: the knowledge of the structural characteristics, physical and chemical properties, extraction and separation methods and techniques of various types of chemical components in natural medicines, and the structural inspection of various types of chemical components; Provide basic professional skills required for pharmacist positions, licensed pharmacist positions, pharmaceutical factory production and quality inspection positions, preparation analysis positions, and drug marketing.

(15) Instrumental analysis

Main content: Modern drug testing relies more and more on high-tech testing instruments, such as ultraviolet spectrophotometer, HPLC, GC and so on.  The main contents of this course includes the basic principle, application scope and operation points of various instruments. Students are required to test various samples by using these instruments, and study to analyze the experimental data. It is helpful for students to adapt to the inspection work easily. 

(16)Pharmaceutical Analysis

Main content: Learn about the work of drug quality testing. The course content and practical training programs are designed according to the process of quality control in the drug production and related test requirements of licensed pharmacist and qualification of drug inspection workers. The methods about physical tests and appearance tests, qualitative and quantitative analysis of raw materials, semi-finished products and finished products, and microbiological test are involved.

Characteristics: Students carry out the quality testing about various drugs and drug formulations by all kinds of testing technologies. Project teaching methods and task-driving teaching methods combined with multimedia are used in the teaching period. The course is intended to provide the student with basic understanding the job of quality control in drugs.

Requirements: students are expected to master the basic principles, methods and operating skills in identification, impurity control and assay of drugs and preparations. Students are also expected to understand and implement the Pharmacopeia of P. R. China and be familiar with the general work of drug quality inspection. Students should be familiarized with the relationship between drug structure, properties and analysis methods and understand the knowledge about development and improvement of drug quality standards.

(17)Pharmaceutics

Main content: Students are presented with the principals and knowledge in pharmaceutics. They are expected to know the production process of various dosage forms, and make production plan accordingly. They should be able to carry out the production of various preparations according to SOP, and can solve the quality problems in the production process of various dosage forms.

Characteristics: teachers combine the traditional teaching methods with multimedia teaching methods in theoretical teaching. Students can learn independently by using the online resources on the course. The outcome of the experiment needed to be emphasized in the process of practical training program. The training programs involves prescription design, prescription analysis and formulation preparation. The experiments should carried out mainly by students.

Requirements: Master the prescription design, preparation technology and preparation precautions of several dosage forms. 60% of final score is theoretical knowledge and 40% is experimental knowledge.

(18)Pharmacology

Main content: The mechanism, effect, clinical use, adverse reactions and precautions of the medication will be presented in the courses. The characteristics of the representative drugs and the differences of all the drugs will be introduced in the courses. Students should have the ability to instruct patients how to use the drugs and the ability of prescription review. Students should have the basic comprehension about pharmacology and toxicology in drug development. The course provides the foundation about the pharmacology and toxicology principals in drug development.

Characteristics: Many kinds of teaching method and resources will be used, for instance, multimedia resource library online, exercise library online, network communication platform and etc. The training project involves the knowledge of the drug and the prescription instruction. Theoretical teaching and training teaching are closely combined in the training programs so that students have deep comprehension of the drug knowledge and safety of drug use. 

Requirements: student evaluation is mainly based on the comprehensive ability of students. Flexible evaluation forms are used. Process evaluation and ability evaluation is adopted in the course evaluation. Formative assessment, experimental assessment, mid-term and final-term assessments are used in the course evaluation.

(19)Good Manufacturing Practices (Pharmaceutical production quality management)

Main content: GMP introduction, Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Practices regulations, management of standard operating procedure, ISO processing procedure in the lab, deviation processing procedure in production, change management on technology, equipment, public facilities, manufacturer, testing methods, quality standards, verification and confirmation, requirements and methods of online monitoring and environmental monitoring in production, adverse reaction reporting process, skills on customer complaint and return management are presented in the course.

Characteristics: There is a lot of theoretical knowledge and little training programs in the course so the experts will be invited to share the GMP practical experience in the class. General knowledge of GMP, key points of GMP, the process of GMP certification and the case analysis will be presented by experts who have the GMP experience. Some training programs will also be carried out so that the theoretical knowledge will be reviewed.

Requirements: student evaluation is mainly based on the comprehensive ability of students. Comprehensive evaluation during students' learning process is used. Process evaluation and ability evaluation is adopted. Process evaluation and result evaluation are combined. Online study evaluation and the class study evaluation, the theoretical evaluation and the practical evaluation are equally valued with a focus on students’ GMP consciousness and professional ability.

(20)Use and maintenance of pharmaceutical equipment

Main content: Students should be able to master the principle of pharmaceutical equipment, characteristics, operation and maintenance of pharmaceutical equipment in pharmaceutical companies. Provided with a basic understanding of the production process of various preparations, students should be able to undertake on-site production, equipment maintenance and management tasks. Students will have honesty, trustworthiness and good communication and teamwork qualities by learning and also lay solid foundation for the development of professional ability.

Characteristics: A variety of teaching methods will be used flexibly by the teachers in class. There are kinds of resources used in class, such as resources online, training at lab in the school, chat online. The training projects are designed by programs so that the students can review the theoretical knowledge. Practical experiences are provided to the students by cooperation with companies and programs carried out by the students at lab.

Requirements: The evaluation of the students is mainly based on the comprehensive ability of students. Comprehensive evaluation during students' learning process is used. Process evaluation and ability evaluation is adopted in the course evaluation. The teaching evaluation values process evaluation and result evaluation, the theoretical evaluation and the practical evaluation with a focus on professional ability of students.

(21)Comprehensive practical training

Main content: Formulations design, preparation, quality control of solid preparations such as tablets, formulations design, preparation, quality control of injections, formulations design, preparation, quality control of semi-solid preparations such as ointment.

Extensive courses 

Extensive courses are divided into optional courses, interdisciplinary elective courses, and professional elective courses.

Professional electives 

A total of 8 credits are required; course will be offered in the third and fourth semesters (appendix table 6)

(1)Basis of biopharmaceuticals 

Main content: Various separation and purification operations of biologically active substances, familiar with the sources, properties, manufacturing principles, processes and methods of different drugs.

(2)Professional English 

Main content: Knowledge of professional vocabulary related to pharmacy, learn to understand foreign English drug standards and instructions of imported raw materials, preparations and pharmaceutical equipment.

(3)Pharmaceutical literature research 

Main content: Understand the basic concepts and basic methods of literature retrieval, understand the concepts of information, knowledge, and intelligence. Understand the relationship between literature and information, knowledge and intelligence. Master the principles, basic approaches and basic steps of pharmaceutical literature retrieval.

(4)Basic knowledge of cosmetics 

Main content: The types of cosmetics, the production process and quality control of various cosmetics, the use and the precautions of common cosmetics. 

(5)Introduction to pharmaceutical engineering

Main content: Basic theory of pharmaceutical engineering. Plant site selection and general layout design. Process design, workshop layout design and piping design. Material balance, energy balance. Pharmaceutical industry and environmental pollution. Fire and explosion protection, safety and sanitation.

(6)Trends in professional development 

Main content: The latest pharmaceutical industry trends in China, drug quality management, pharmaceutical literature retrieval, and scientific writing, etc. To meet the needs of different pharmaceutical positions, to cooperate with pharmaceutical companies, medical and health administration, such as Eli Lilly and Company, Suzhou Manufacturing, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Limited, Suzhou Erye Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., B.Braun Medical(Suzhou)Co.,Ltd., Suzhou Tianji Bio-Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Suzhou Poseidon United Medical Equipment Co., Ltd., and Suzhou Drug Inspection and Testing Research Center.

(7)Pharmaceutical marketing 

Main content: Introduce the basic theoretical knowledge of pharmaceutical marketing, understand the particularity of pharmaceutical market, master the relevant strategies of pharmaceutical marketing, and be able to use marketing strategies skillfully. Learn to use relevant knowledge for medical marketing planning, marketing research, marketing analysis, buying behavior analysis, and terminal promotion.
